As a homeowner we typically only prepare for threats we can see with our eyes, but what about the invisible forces like hydrostatic pressure? Hydrostatic pressure is an invisible force that lurks beneath the soil, which poses a significant risk to the structural integrity of homes - specifically crawl spaces and basements.

What is Hydrostatic Pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted against your basement and crawl space walls by groundwater deep beneath the surface. As the soil around your home gets saturated during heavy rains or rapid snowmelt, it increases the hydrostatic pressure around your home. As the force builds around your basement and crawl space walls it forces water through any gaps or cracks in the foundation leading to leaks and basement flooding.

How Hydrostatic Pressure Effects Your Basement & Crawl Space

1. Water intrusion: The most noticeable sign of hydrostatic pressure is water entering the basement through any cracks in the foundation, floors, or walls leading to a wet basement or crawl space. As water enters your basement it can lead to issues like mold, mildew, and even cause costly structural damage to your home. Remember that basement and crawl space problems don't get better with time and are best to be addressed right away.

2. Mold & Mildew Growth: As water makes its way into your basement it will create a damp, humid environment, which creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which affects the air you breathe inside and puts your family's health at risk. If you ever walked into a basement and smelled that musty basement smell, that's actually mold starting to grow in your basement.

3. Structural Damage: Over time long-term exposure to hydrostatic pressure can weaken the integrity of your foundation. It can cause cracks to widen, walls to bow, which are all costly home repairs, but if left alone it can cause foundation failure, which puts you and your family's lives at risk.

Basement & Crawl Space Solutions to Combat Hrodostatic Pressure:

1. Interior basement waterproofing: Calling a basement waterproofing company and having them install an interior drainage system in your basement can help alleviate the hydrostatic pressure that's built up around the foundation of your home. As water enters the basement or crawl space it will enter the basement waterproofing system, which will direct the water out of the space and away from the foundation of the home.

2. Sump Pump Installation: As water enters your basement and enters the drainage system it typically runs into a sump pump system, which is installed in the lowest part of the basement or crawl space and directs the water out of the basement or crawl space and away from the foundation of the home.

3. Proper Grading & Drainage: An easy oversight when trying to address your basement flooding issues can be a simple fix as the grade of your property. If your property doesn't slope away from your foundation you're going to allow water to build up around your foundation of the home creating hydrostatic pressure. Ensuring your property has a ground slope that slopes away from your home will allow water to drain across soil that isn't pressed right up against the foundation of your home, which reduces the hydrostatic pressure around your foundation.

4. Foundation Cracks:

Hydrostatic pressure is an invisible force that if left alone will create major issues for your basement or crawl space. By understanding the effects of hydrostatic pressure it allows you to protect your home from severe damage and maintain a dry. healthy space.

Long Island is no stranger to Hurricanes and Tropical Storms, making it crucial for homeowners to make proactive decisions to protect their property from the potential damages that are caused by these types of storms. Hurricanes bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and basement flooding, which is commonly overlooked, we will explain in this blog post how a basement waterproofing system can safeguard your basement even in a Hurricane.

Threats of Hurricanes & The Role of A Waterproofing System:

When Hurricanes make landfall they wreak havoc on homes from all the intense wind, rain, and flooding. Typically when communities get flooded, water will enter the most vulnerable point of a home, which is the basement due to it being the lowest part of the home. A basement waterproofing system can play a crucial role in protecting your basement from water intrusion during events like Hurricanes and Tropical Storms. A good basement waterproofing system will keep your basement dry, prevent mold growth, and protect your valuables from water damage.

Healthy Basement Systems Waterproofing Approach:

1. Interior Drainage System: Our interior drainage system is called WaterGuard and it gets installed around the perimeter of the basement under your cement floor. It will capture any water that tries to enter the basement and direct it to a sump pump system, which then discharges the water out of the basement and away from the foundation of the home.

2. Sump Pump Systems: The sump pump system is the heart of any basement waterproofing, this will discharge any water that enters the sump pump system out of the home and away from the foundation of the home, preventing flooding and water damage. During Hurricanes you might say will we typically lose power, how will my sump pump still be able to operate? Here at Healthy Basement Systems, we offer advanced sump pump systems that come equipped with battery backup systems to ensure your system can run all the time even during a power outage.

3. Foundation Wall Seepage: To add another layer of protection to your basement we can seal your basement walls from water vaper permeating through the concrete foundation by installing a vapor barrier system over the foundation walls.

Hurricane Preparation:

Here are some preventative measures homeowners can take to help protect their basement during Hurricane season:

- Clear gutters and downspouts of any debris to ensure proper water drainage.

- If you have any cracks in your foundation, you should have those sealed up to prevent water seepage.

- Ensure to have your sump pump system maintenanced on a yearly basis to ensure it's correctly functioning.

Protect your basement from Hurricanes and Tropical Storms by taking the necessary measures to protect your home from water damage. Remember prevention is key, by investing in a basement waterproofing system you can have peace of mind knowing your home is properly protected from water damage. Contact us today and learn more about how our basement waterproofing system can help protect your basement even during Hurricane Season.

If you own a home with a crawl space, especially an older home you might have started to notice that the floor above your crawl space has started to sag or become bouncy. This is typically a good indicator that your floors are starting to sag down into your crawl space, which can indicate a structural issue that can put you and your family at risk of serious injury. Luckily our company offers SmartJack, which are adjustable steel support beams that can provide the proper lift and support to your sagging floors.

What Causes Floors to Sag?

Here are the most common factors that lead to sagging floors in crawl spaces:

Life Span: The age of your home can play a role in your floor's health, your floor joists will sag over time due to not having enough support to support the weight of the furniture or people above.

Sinking Piers: In some cases, masonry piers will sink into the soil, failing to provide the proper support to your floors causing them to become bouncy and sag.

Wood Rot: Moisture in your crawl space can lead to your wood support beams rotting causing them to fail.

Why Are SmartJacks the Best Solution?

The advantages to SmartJacks:

Durability: Made out of galvanized steel, which is resistant to rust making it the perfect support beam for high humidity areas.

When it comes to properly insulating your home there are no shortcuts you can take and produce great results. When you cut corners insulating your home you end up just spending that extra money on heating and cooling your home, that's why it doesn't make sense to cut corners when insulating your home. When it comes to properly insulating your home, the crawl space is the most overlooked area, which provides an important role in making your home energy efficient, this is where our SilverGlo insulation comes in because it can transform any crawl space into an insulated energy-efficient space. SilverGlo insulation was specifically designed for crawl spaces, here are some reasons SilverGlo is the perfect insulation for your crawl space:

1. Energy Efficient

SilverGlo is superior insulation that helps improve the energy saving of homes due to its ability for preventing heat loss and its ability to block heat from entering the space, minimizing the amount of heating and air conditioning required to keep your home comfortable all year round.

2. Reflective Radiant Barrier

What makes our SilverGlo insulation better than others is that it comes with a built-in radiant barrier, which is designed to help reflect heat back into space during winter and prevent the outside heat from entering in the summer. This will help any homeowner save on their heating and cooling bills while reducing their environmental footprint.

3. Infused With Graphite

Our SilverGlo insulation is infused with a graphite material, which increases the insulation's ability to reflect heat and insulate by a significant amount. Our insulation's performance is unmatched when compared to your typical standard insulation.

4. Durable & Moisture Resistant

Unlike traditional insulation, our SilverGlo insulation can be exposed to moisture and water without it degrading over time or allowing mold or mildew to grow on it, making it the perfect insulation for those high-moisture areas.

5. Improved Air Quality

SilverGlo is an inorganic material meaning it won't allow mold or mildew to grow on it, which will also help improve the air quality in the crawl space by preventing the growth of mold and mildew.

If you're looking to save money on your heating and cooling bills then our SilverGlo insulation is the perfect insulation for your crawl space areas.
If you have a basement on Long Island you know the importance of keeping your basement dry and healthy. When your basement leaks or floods it makes the basement vulnerable to mold, mildew, odors, structural damage, and health problems for you and your family. Introducing a basement waterproofing system into a leaking basement is a great way to turn any leaking basement into dry usable space. One of the industry's most effective, popular, and innovative products is our interior drainage system called WaterGuard, our WaterGuard product is used throughout the world's largest basement waterproofing contracting network. WaterGuard comes with several advantages over other drainage systems, in this blog we'll discuss some of the advantages and why you should choose WaterGuard when waterproofing your basement.

How WaterGuard Works

Our WaterGuard system works by our crew coming in and jackhammering a trench around the perimeter of the basement so they can install the WaterGuard below the concrete slab. The way this works is by our WaterGuard system capturing water from both the walls and floors before it can enter the basement and directs the water to our TripleSafe sump pump system, which pumps any water in the system out of the basement and away from the foundation. Our WaterGuard's unique design:

- a wall flange that collects any water seepage from the walls and directs it down into our WaterGuard system before having the chance of reaching your dry basement floors.

- holes in the back of the WaterGuard system allows groundwater to easily enter the drainage system.

WaterGuard Advantages

Some benefits WaterGuard has over traditional drainage systems:

- Once our WaterGuard system has been installed it's almost invisible with only the top of the wall flange visible and no visible trenches to worry about.

- Interior drainage systems are less expensive and intrusive than exterior drainage systems as there's no need to dig up your yard, remove landscaping, or expose the foundation to the elements.

- WaterGuard is designed to resist clogging from dirt, roots, or other debris due to its smooth surface that stops sediment from building up on it and allows for easy water flow.

Why Use WaterGuard for Your Basement Waterproofing

Our WaterGuard system has been installed in thousands of basements across the United States and even Canada, proving how effective of a solution it is to protect basements from flooding. Basement problems don't get better with time, they actually get worse, find out today why thousands of homeowners have chosen to use WaterGuard for their basement waterproofing needs.

When a crawl space isn't properly insulated it opens the door to dampness, mold, and pests, which no homeowner wants to deal with. By insulating your crawl space you end up sealing off these vulnerabilities, which will protect your home from damage.

A crawl space is often a forgotten space, but it can also contain numerous health and safety issues. Most crawl spaces aren't encapsulated, which leaves the crawl space vulnerable to moisture, pests, mold, and higher cooling and heating bills. Crawl space encapsulation is the process of sealing a crawl space off from the outside elements and treating it like it's part of the home. The way we encapsulate a crawl space is by installing drainage matting with our CleanSpace vapor barrier system on top of it, which will turn the crawl space into a clean, dry, bright, usable space.

Why is Crawl Space Encapsulation Important?

1. Improves Air Quality: Unsealed crawl spaces can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew, and insects due to the high humidity levels in these spaces. Mold growing in your crawl space can lead to spores entering your main living area and spreading throughout the breathable air in your home.

2. Increase Energy Efficiency: By insulating and encapsulating your crawl space you can significantly improve how energy efficient your home is, by preventing outside air from entering the space you will cut down on the HVAC workload, leading to lower energy bills.

3. Prevents Pest Infestations: A properly encapsulated crawl space will create a protective barrier that deters pests and rodents from invading your crawl space.

4. Protects Home Structure: By removing moisture from the crawl space you can prevent the wood in the crawl space from rotting, warping, and causing serious structural problems, an encapsulated crawl space helps maintain the integrity of the structure of the home by reducing how much moistures in the crawl space.

The first step in encapsulating your crawl space is giving us a call and scheduling a free estimate with one of our specialists who will come to your home and inspect your crawl space. After inspecting the crawl space our specialists will determine the appropriate materials needed to turn your crawl space into a clean, dry, usable one. We will then schedule an installation date with you to have our production crew come in to turn your crawl space into a clean encapsulated space. Contact us today for a free estimate.

Understanding Why Basements Flood

Basements often serve as home gyms, extra storage, or are finished for additional living space, sometimes these spaces flood and turn into wet, damp, musty, unusable spaces. Basements flooding is actually a pretty common problem to have, in this post, we will shed some light on the reasons why basements are prone to flooding.

1. Improver Grading

The design and grading of your backyard landscaping can play a significant roll in the way water flows, your property should slope away from your home to ensure rainwater is directed away from the foundation of the home. If your property is sloping toward your home it's going to allow water to flow toward the foundation of your home, allowing water to pool against the foundation, resulting in flooding.

2. Foundation Cracks

The quality of your basement foundation is fundamental in preventing basement flooding, overtime your home's foundation might develop foundation cracks due to movement in the soil, hydrostatic pressure, or aging. These foundation cracks can allow water to infiltrate the basement and cause potential flooding.

4. Heavy Rain

Sometimes nature unleashes forces that our homes aren't properly equipped to handle, when it rains a lot and saturates the ground it increases the hydrostatic pressure around the foundation of your home. This pressure can cause water to seep into your basement through any available opens likes cracks and cold joints, leading to basement flooding.

Understanding why your basement floods allows you as the homeowner to take the proper steps needed to protect your home from basement flooding. We recommend you check your basement regularly for any cracks and have them properly repaired, ensure your property is properly graded with the slopes going away from the foundation of your home, and keep your sump pump properly maintained, this can go a long way in keeping your basement dry and usable. We might not be able to control the weather or prevent all causes of basement flooding, but we can equip your home with the proper basement waterproofing system that will keep your basement dry and usable all the time.

Crawl space encapsulation is the process of turning your nasty, wet, unusable crawl space and makes it into a clean, dry, usable space. The way we encapsulate a crawl space is by installing our drainage mattering along the crawl space floor which will allow for any water or moisture to move freely under the drainage matting. If the crawl space is having a water issue we will install our sump pump system in the crawl space that will capture and discharge any water that tries to enter the crawl space. We then install our CleanSpace vapor barrier over the drainage matting which is bright white and will make this space clean and dry by stopping any water or moisture from entering the crawl space area. For the crawl space walls, we put our SilverGlo insulation on the walls which helps reflect heat back into the space making it more energy-efficient, while also acting like a vapor barrier on the walls. We also install our self-discharging dehumidifier system in crawl spaces which are designed to self-discharge, so you never need to worry about emptying it while it also filtering out any moisture and small mold particles that might be in the air, making the crawl space into a clean, dry, usable space for many years to come.

Is waterproofing your basement worth it? Well, it comes down to the type of issue you're having in your basement, if water doesn't enter your basement when it rains outside then you probably don't need to waterproof your basement unless you're thinking of finishing your basement. If you have plans to finish your basement then it's a good idea to waterproof your basement to make sure you protect your investment. Here at Healthy Basement Systems we constantly see homeowners who had a completely dry basement and didn't waterproof their basement before finishing their basement to eventually have their foundation leak and ruin their finished basement, now the homeowner needs to rip out their finished basement to waterproof it to start to basement finishing process over again. Situations like this makes it worth it to waterproof your basement before you finish it to help protect your investment. If you don't plan to finish your basement is it still worth it to have your basement waterproofed? If water is leaking into your basement then you probably do need a basement waterproofing system installed in your basement to make your basement dry & usable. If you have a basement that is constantly leaking when it rains outside this issue won't go away on its own, it actually might get worse the longer you leave the issue alone meaning more and more of your basement is unusable. Not just is the basement now unusable but all that water and moisture in it will create an unhealthy environment with mold making the basement even more unusable. So it really depends on the problem you're having in your basement or if you want to finish your basement will determine if it's worth it or not to waterproof your basement.

When you have a basement that leaks with water constantly you most likely need a basement waterproofing system to ensure your basement remains clean, dry, and usable. How does a basement waterproofing system exactly work? Our basement waterproofing system works by our crew coming in and jackhammering out the cement around your basement perimeter and installing our WaterGuard system in that perimeter trench we just created. We then connect our Waterguard system to one of our sump pump system which comes in different sizes depending on how much water is entering your basement. After the system is connected with the correct amount of pumps in the sump pump we install our discharge line that goes from the sump pump to the outside. You're probably still asking yourself well how does this keep my basement dry? This system is designed so that as water tries to enter your basement our WaterGuard system will catch the water and direct it to our sump pump system which then discharges the water back outside leaving the basement completely dry and usable for many years to come.

After our salesman Nick gave the homeowner a visit he determined that our CleanSpace vapor barrier and SilverGlo insulation was the best solution for the homeowner. Our CleanSpace vapor barrier that is designed to reduces moisture & humidity in crawl space, helps seal out cold drafts in winter, suitable for installation over walls and floors, super durable: 20mil thick, 7-layer polyethylene composition, with polyester cord reinforcement, can be used on basement and crawl space walls, compatible with other crawl space materials, and comes with a 25-year total performance warranty. We also installed our SilverGlo insulation product that is designed with built-in radiant heat barrier surface, it will also provide a vapor barrier on your crawl space walls, holding back the moisture and humidity. The closed-cell design of SilverGlo's rigid foam panels is made with completely inorganic materials, and will not absorb moisture or support the growth of mold, rot, or mildew. By insulating their crawl space it will also help the homeowner with energy costs because vented dirt crawl spaces are huge energy wasters. In the winter, freezing cold air can enter into your home, making your floors and air in your home cold which will cost you more in higher heating costs.

Healthy Basement Systems Wins 2015 Pulse of the City News Customer Satisfaction Award

Healthy Basement Systems
Long Island's Healthy Basement Systems receives high praise from satisfied customers, earning it the 2015 Pulse of the City Customer Satisfaction Award.

With a five-star customer satisfaction rating, Healthy Basement Systems has earned the 2015 Pulse of the City News Customer Satisfaction Award.

Pulse of the City News is committed to finding and honoring those companies in the building and construction industry that have provided an excellent customer experience for their customers. The Pulse research team analyzes research and information gathered from many sources, including online business and consumer user-review websites, blogs, social media, business-rating services, and other credible sources, and determines a yearly rating for each company. Companies that receive the highest possible rating of 4 to 5 stars earn the Pulse Award.

In business for little more than a decade, Healthy Basement Systems has grown by leaps and bounds, already outgrowing its first two locations to become the largest basement waterproofing and crawlspace environmental company on Long Island. Adding mold remediation and foundation repair work to its list of services, the company is now a one-stop shop for below-grade space — the only company to do that on Long Island.

Bill Simone, Owner of Healthy Basement Systems, attributes his company’s high customer satisfaction rating and award to his team’s dedication to not simply meeting, but exceeding customers’ expectations. “We make sure that we not only do what we are contracted to do, but also that little extra cleanup or attention to detail that really makes the customer say ‘not many contractors do that,’” says Mr. Simone.

Training is also a key component in the company’s customer service success. “If customers call with questions, we want all our staff to know the answers,” says Mr. Simone. “That means a commitment to training in every department. Our production department team members are fully trained to install all our products and they work off the design of the sales technician who specializes in the knowledge of water intrusion, mold and air quality. Every employee here at Healthy Basement Systems is required to watch videos and attend training classes several times a year.”

The Healthy Basement Systems team always places a priority on excellent customer service, and that comes from the top down. “We treat every customer with the same respect every time they call,” says Mr. Simone. “Denise, our office manager, has been with the company for 11 years and she really knows how to talk with the people. She is very knowledgeable and passes that knowledge on to the rest of the staff. We keep a very high standard here so any new employees know how to treat the customers and potential customers and what is expected from them.”

Mr. Simone adds, “We aim to be the most dependable company on Long Island and the most advanced in our industry. Our people have the same desires for their communities.”

About Healthy Basement Systems
Healthy Basement Systems was founded in 2004 by Bill Simone. The company’s services include basement waterproofing, crawl space repair, mold removal, foundation repair and basement finishing throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties.

Healthy Basement Systems
Striving for excellence through out the company, the office staff took it upon themselves to become fully certified in Mold Remediation along with the production and sales team!

With the ending of 2014, rolling on into 2015, Healthy Basement Systems is always looking for ways to grow and become an even better company. Each department is constantly asked to give feed back on how they can improve upon what they've been doing and suggest new ideas.

Healthy Basement Systems is a multi-service company specializing in many different areas of improving basements, crawlspaces and home foundations. Being that we live on an island surrounded by water, one of the most common calls they receive from distressed home owners is usually in regards to serious mold problems.

It dawned on company owner, Bill Simone, that all of his sales and production teams were fully certified by Anabec to use their mold removal/prevention products. The office had never had a reason to be certified being that they don't traditionally go out into the field. However, the need for everyone to have knowledge on mold remediation became very apparent with the increase in phone calls and questions about the matter with every passing year.

Once it was decided to move forward in certifying everyone, the process moved quickly. Each team member was motivated to study the material and prepare to take the online test. Things even got a bit competitive in seeing who would score the highest!

A few short weeks later, everyone had taken their tests and eagerly awaited to see that they passed. All team members passed with flying colors and received their official certification awards in the mail.

Healthy Basement Systems is very proud to announce that every team member is now officially Anabec certified in mold remediation!

Healthy Basement Systems’ Bill Simone spoke about crawl spaces at the Fifth Annual Joint Seminar by the Long Island chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the Metropolitan Association of Home Inspectors (MAHI). The event took place February 27-28 in Ronkonkoma, NY.

The “Healthy Crawl Spaces” course was taught by Dan Fitzgerald, director of marketing for Basement Systems, Inc. and Bill Simone of Healthy Basement Systems. Bill discussed his experiences as a crawl space repair contractor. The course provided home inspectors with an in-depth overview of the dreaded crawl space, including common issues like moisture, mold, and radon, and the health problems these issues can cause. The instructors also discussed the best solutions for crawl space remediation, including ventilation, insulation, sump pumps, vapor barriers, and dehumidification systems.

Bill’s many years of experience in the industry made him the perfect teacher for this course. He says, “I was happy to share my knowledge with others and help them realize the dangers of damaged crawl spaces.”

Home inspectors attending the seminar had the opportunity to earn a total of 12 continuing education credits (6 CEUs per day). All ASHI inspectors are required to earn 20 hours per year in continuing education credits.
